Maths tuition · Coventry CV5 & online, UK-wide

Just taught too fast, or taught the trick instead of the reason. Jaz spent seven years in Coventry secondary classrooms watching that happen, then started tutoring at the kitchen table on Alderminster Road. Now it’s one to one, in person across Coventry and online anywhere in the UK.

What we actually teach

The why before the how

A shortcut gets you through Friday’s test. Understanding gets you through the paper in June. So we would rather spend forty minutes on why the method works than drill twenty questions that’ll be gone by Sunday.

That’s slower at the start. Parents notice it around week five, when their child stops asking “which one is this?” and starts asking “can I try it a different way?”

Where we can help

From times tables to Further Maths

Hourly rates below. Sessions run in person at CV5 or at your home within five miles, and online on a shared whiteboard for everyone else.

KS2 maths & SATs

Years 5 and 6. Arithmetic fluency first, then the reasoning papers, which is where most of the marks actually go missing.

from £34 / hr
KS3 maths

Years 7 to 9 — the quiet years when gaps open up unnoticed and nobody sets an exam to catch them.

from £36 / hr
11+ maths & reasoning

Coventry and Warwickshire grammar entry. Timed practice under real conditions, plus the non-verbal reasoning nobody teaches at school.

from £44 / hr
GCSE maths — Foundation & Higher

AQA, Edexcel and OCR. We work from the student’s own mock paper, not a generic scheme of work.

from £40 / hr
A-level Maths & Further Maths

Pure, mechanics, statistics and the Further modules. Also useful for the maths half of an economics or physics A-level.

from £48 / hr
Functional Skills & adult resits

Level 1 and 2, and the GCSE resit. Evening slots. Nobody here will make you feel daft for asking about fractions at thirty-four.

from £38 / hr
Small group revision (max 4)

Term-time GCSE and A-level revision blocks. Four students, one topic per session, priced per student.

£22 / hr each

Prices are per hour and confirmed after the free assessment session. Travel inside five miles of CV5 is included; beyond that we’ll agree it up front. Blocks of six sessions paid in advance are charged at five.

Online sessions

Same hour, same board, different room

Online runs on a shared whiteboard we both write on, so you see the working appear rather than watching a face talk about it. Sessions are recorded on request and the board is saved as a PDF afterwards, which is far more use in revision week than a page of hurried notes.

It suits A-level students and adult learners best. For KS2 we’d honestly rather sit in the same room if you’re anywhere near Coventry.

Who you’d be sitting with

We took on eleven students in the first year and turned away four.

The study where sessions are taught — desk, bookshelves and a wall of notes

Jaz trained at Warwick, got QTS in 2018 and taught maths in Coventry secondary schools for seven years. The last two of those were spent running intervention groups — thirty minutes, six students, one week before a mock. It didn’t work, and everybody knew it didn’t work. You cannot repair two years of missing foundations in a corridor.

So in 2022 the tutoring started at home in the evenings, one student at a time. Eleven the first year. We turned four away because they wanted a grade lifted in a fortnight, and that isn’t something we can honestly sell. It became a limited company this year, which changed the paperwork and nothing else: same kitchen table, same hour, same insistence on working out why before working out what.

We don’t take on students in the last two weeks before an exam, and we don’t do “catch-up” blocks of six sessions with no follow-up. If someone needs eight months, we’ll say eight months. That loses us work now and again. It also means the students who do sit down here tend to stay until they’ve finished.

Four steps, no contract

A twenty-minute chat

By phone, free. What’s the exam, what’s the deadline, what’s actually going wrong. No pitch at the end of it.

One free assessment

A full hour, no charge. Usually the gap isn’t where school thinks it is — it’s two or three years further back.

The same hour, weekly

A fixed slot, kept for you in term time. Consistency does more than cramming ever has.

A written note, monthly

Half a page after every fourth session: what moved, what didn’t, what we’re doing about it. Cancel any time, 24 hours’ notice.

Before you ring

The questions we get every week

AQA, Edexcel and OCR for GCSE and A-level, plus OCR MEI for Further Maths. Bring the mock paper and the mark scheme along to the assessment session and we’ll work from those.

That sentence is nearly always about one topic that went wrong three years ago, not about ability. Find it, fix it properly, and the rest usually follows. What we can’t promise is speed — if the gap goes back to Year 5, it takes a couple of terms, and we’ll say so at the assessment rather than after you’ve paid for six sessions.

At the study on Alderminster Road in CV5, at your home anywhere within five miles — Earlsdon, Canley, Tile Hill, Allesley, Coundon and the surrounding streets — or online. There’s off-street parking here, which matters more than you’d think on a school night.

Twenty-four hours’ notice and there’s no charge, no questions. Under that and we ask for half the session fee, because the slot has been held all week. There’s no contract and no minimum block — you can stop whenever you like.

No, and we won’t take the booking. Three weeks buys exam technique and a bit of confidence, not missing foundations, and charging for the second while delivering the first isn’t something we’re prepared to do. Ring anyway — we’ll tell you honestly what three weeks can and can’t change.

Regularly. Functional Skills Level 2, GCSE resits for nursing and teacher-training applications, and people who simply want to stop dreading spreadsheets at work. Evening and Saturday-morning slots are usually the ones that suit.

Tell us the year group, the exam and the deadline. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll say so and point you at someone who is — there are two other tutors in CV5 we’d happily recommend.
